The rental scam is a growing problem across the country. It may seem like a simple con, but the amount of money that can be stolen by renting out your home or apartment can be significant.

Four types of rental scams exist:

Rental fraud

Rental misrepresentation

In this type of scam, scammers advertise properties on sites like Craigslist and HomeAway, where they advertise them as being in locations where they're not actually located. They also use fake photos of the property and make up false information about the location.

The scammers then contact potential renters to set up appointments to view the property, but when they show up at their appointments, the properties are either not available or located in another part of town than what was advertised — which means that if you pay for it anyway, you're handing over money to criminals.

Rental misrepresentation

This scam involves telling prospective renters that they have a chance to win a large sum of money if they rent from them and then asking for upfront fees before giving them any keys to their homes. These scams often come dressed as legitimate ads on websites, so it's important to read carefully.

It is a common occurrence that people face with the rental scams in India. We have heard many stories and seen many videos, which shows how these companies are taking advantage of the people. In most of the cases, they are charging more than the actual rent and then they ask the customer to pay additional money as penalty or service charge. They also try to get personal information like name, address, phone number etc.

There are many ways that you can avoid getting involved in this kind of scam and here are some tips that you should follow:

Keep your appointment time: If you are going for an inspection, make sure that you reach at least 15 minutes before time as there may be traffic jam or any other problem that can delay your arrival by 20 minutes or more.

Never pay upfront: If someone asks for money from you before renting out any property then it is always better not to give him/her anything at all because if he/she does not pay the money back then this will become a big problem for both of you later on.
